"There's not going to be an Eeyore mentality here; it's not going to be, 'Woe is us.' We need to play," Hurdle said. "We need not to dwell on what we don't have and figure out what we do have and figure out how we're going to win ballgames with what we do have."
The Rockies will replace Taveras with Ryan Spilborghs and Cory Sullivan. Spilborghs started Sunday's game. Matsui's replacement Saturday was Jamey Carroll, who was also in the leadoff role usually filled by Taveras. Omar Quintanilla and Clint Barmes could also see time at second base.
With Taveras and Matsui out, the Rockies lose their two leading base stealers. But they will gain power and a run-producing bat in Spilborghs.
Spilborghs has 45 RBIs this season in 78 games and 44 starts entering Sunday. However, Spilborghs has just three hits in his last 29 at-bats to drop his average from .322 to .291.
"I've been getting quality at-bats the same as I have all year, except I haven't gotten the results that I expect or other people expect," Spilborghs said. "I'm not going to put more pressure on myself to try to get hits, because that's going to make me awful. I'm not going to be able to play very well if I'm pressing for a hit."
Spilborghs looked to be pressing when he pinch-hit Saturday night and struck out swinging at two pitches out of the strike zone. He said he's had some tough luck as of late with hitting the ball hard right at someone, but both he and Hurdle feel his luck will change soon.
"I don't think he's a .400 hitter. He was hot. He went through a hot streak," Hurdle said. "He was barreling up everybody, especially the left-handed pitching. They started counterpunching a little bit, doing some things differently... Spilly has a lot of offensive upside and we hope to revisit that the next three weeks."
Bunt record safe?
If Taveras is done for the season, his Major League-leading 37 bunt hits will fall five short of the MLB record, a statistic which has been kept since 1974. Brett Butler set the record with the Dodgers in 1992 with 42 bunt hits in 553 at-bats. Taveras, who is in second, has only 372 at-bats this season.
Todd Helton entered Sunday's game needing one more double to become the first player in Major League history to hit at least 35 doubles for 10 consecutive seasons. He leads the Major Leagues with 445 doubles since 1998. Bobby Abreu is in second place with 395 doubles.
The Rockies head to Philadelphia for a four-game series with the Phillies. Rookie Ubaldo Jimenez (3-3, 4.15 ERA) starts Game 1 for Colorado against Philly's Kyle Lohse (8-12, 4.46). Game time Monday is at 5:05 p.m. MT.
