HOUSTON -- Rockies infielder Chris Nelson was given permission to leave the team on Sunday afternoon to be with his ill mother in Atlanta, Rockies manager Jim Tracy said before Sunday's game against the Astros.
Nelson has hit .250 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 63 games with the Rockies. Nelson played mostly second base. In his final start of the season on Saturday night, Nelson started at shortstop, hit cleanup and drove in the winning run with a 13th-inning walk.
Since being recalled on Sept. 9, Nelson played through the pain of a left heel injury and hit .375 (9-for-24) with two home runs and four RBIs.
