Torrealba undergoes knee surgery

|
DENVER -- Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. Rockies medical director Dr. Thomas J. Noonan performed the procedure at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver.

Placed on the disabled list Saturday, Torrealba wanted to have the procedure done quickly in hopes of returning before the end of the regular season. It's not clear when or if he will return. The club's statement said no date has been set for his return to baseball activities.

Torrealba, 30, in the first year of a two-year, $7.25 million contract, is hitting .246 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 70 games. Chris Iannetta has received the greater share of playing time behind the plate. Torrealba last played Aug. 25, when he hit a home run in the Rockies' 4-2 victory over the Giants.
