CarGo listed day-to-day with sprained finger

PHOENIX -- Facing D-backs standout pitcher Patrick Corbin was painful in more ways than one for Rockies All-Star left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Gonzalez hurt his right middle finger at the end of a sixth-inning strikeout against Corbin, and had to leave Sunday's 6-1 loss in the middle of an at-bat when pain shot through the finger after fouling off a pitch against reliever Josh Collmenter in the ninth. Postgame X-rays revealed a sprained ligament in the finger, and he's listed as day-to-day.

The injury to Gonzalez, hitting .304 and leading the National League with 24 home runs, comes at a time when good days are few and far between for the Rockies. They're already dealing with leadoff man Dexter Fowler (right hand) and cleanup hitter Troy Tulowitzki (broken rib) on the 15-day disabled list, although both are beginning rehab assignments at Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday.

"On the last swing when Corbin struck me out with a slider, the finger kind of got stuck," Gonzalez said. "Before my last at-bat I was swinging in the on-deck circle and it was hurting. Then I took a full swing, and it felt bad. That's why I came out of the game."

This is the second time in less than a week that Gonzalez has been hurt. He suffered a strain of a muscle near the left shoulder blade during Thursday's 9-5 victory over the Dodgers at Coors Field and missed Friday's game. The Rockies will have to decide before Monday's game against the Padres at Petco Park whether Gonzalez will be able to go.

Injuries bookended Sunday's game for the Rockies. Starting pitcher Roy Oswalt left with a hamstring strain in the second inning.

"We lose Oswalt in the second inning, then I hurt myself on a swing. ... We're just going through a bad moment," Gonzalez said. "Things will get better."
