The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation (retroactive to August 1). In addition, the club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jeff Manship from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To create a 40-man roster spot for Manship, the Rockies have recalled left-handed pitcher Christian Friedrich and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with lower back inflammation. Manship (#50) is scheduled to start today's game against the New York Mets at Citi Field (10:10 a.m. MT).
Chatwood, 24, has made 15 starts for the Rockies this year after beginning the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs. For Colorado, he has gone 7-4 with a 3.15 ERA (85.2 ip, 30 er) with 28 walks compared to 60 strikeouts. He threw his first career complete game on July 13 at Los Angeles when he went 8.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits but received the loss. Chatwood has appeared in 61 career Major League games with 52 starts and has gone 18-21 with a 4.43 ERA (292.1 ip, 144 er).
Manship, 28, has spent the entire season with Triple-A Colorado Springs where he has gone 6-8 with a 4.85 ERA (104.0 ip, 56 er) in 24 games and 17 starts. Over his last five starts, the right-hander has gone 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA (33.2 ip, 9 er) with seven walks and 28 strikeouts. The Texas native joined Colorado this past offseason after spending his first seven years in the Minnesota Twins organization where he pitched in 41 Major League games with six starts, going 3-2 with a 6.20 ERA (85.2 ip, 59 er), 32 walks and 56 strikeouts.
Friedrich, 26, has made four starts for Triple-A Colorado Springs this year going 0-1 with a 4.30 ERA (14.2 ip, 7 er). The left-hander was the Rockies first round (25th overall) selection in the 2008 First-Year Amateur Draft and made his Major League debut last year on May 9 at San Diego. In 16 Major League starts last year, he went 5-8 with a 6.17 ERA (84.2 ip, 58 er) with 30 walks and 74 strikeouts.
The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
