Rockies activate C Yorvit Torrealba from 7-day disabled list

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has activated catcher Yorvit Torrealba from the 7-day disabled list. In addition, the club has optioned infielder/outfielder Ryan Wheeler to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Torrealba (#8) will be active for tonight's game against San Francisco (6:40 p.m. MDT).

Torrealba, 35, batted .252 (36-for-143) with 6 doubles, 10 RBI and 9 runs scored in 51 games this season for the Rockies before being placed on the disabled list on August 19 with a concussion. In 27 home games, he has hit .324 (23-for-71) with 4 doubles, 7 RBI and 7 runs. This year is Torrealba's 13th Major League season, his 5th with Colorado (2006-09, 2013). The Venezuela native has also spent time with San Francisco (2001-05), Seattle (2005), San Diego (2010), Texas (2011-12), Toronto (2012) and Milwaukee (2012). In 897 career Major League games, Torrealba has batted .257 (739-for-2839) with 160 doubles, 12 triples, 56 home runs and 333 RBI.

Wheeler, 25, has made two stints on the Rockies active roster this year batting .211 (4-for-19) with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and a run. In his most recent stint which began on August 19, he went 3-for-10 with a double and 2 RBI in four games. Wheeler has spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he has hit .308 (128-for-415) with 29 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 81 RBI and 72 runs in 110 games. Wheeler has spent time in the Majors in each of the last two seasons, as he saw playing time in 50 games for Arizona in 2012. In 60 career games in the Majors he has batted .234 (30-for-128) with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 12 RBI.

The Rockies currently have 39 on the 40-man roster.
