Rockies likely done with Deadline deals

Rockies likely done trading

CINCINNATI -- The Rockies most likely have made all the deals they're going to make before Friday's 2 p.m. MT non-waiver Trading Deadline, general manager Dan O'Dowd said Thursday afternoon.

Last week, the Rockies acquired right-handed setup man Rafael Betancourt from the Indians for right-hander Connor Graham, a fifth-round pick in 2007. The bullpen still has just one lefty, but O'Dowd said he does not anticipate finding a fit.

On Thursday, the National League West-leading Dodgers obtained Orioles closer George Sherrill for two prospects, pitcher Steve Johnson and third baseman Josh Bell. The Giants, who this week have surpassed the Rockies atop the NL Wild Card standings, believe they improved themselves on Wednesday by acquiring Pirates All-Star infielder Freddy Sanchez.

But O'Dowd said his club is competitive as is, especially with the acquisition of Betancourt. With the one lefty being inexperienced but talented Franklin Morales, O'Dowd is not going to make a deal costly in terms of progress just because a deadline is approaching.

"We made a deal to improve our club last week and we gave up a prospect, one of our better ones," O'Dowd said. "Our pitching and our club was good enough to get us to where we are now. We feel good about our club."

The Rockies made a play for Sherrill. But the Dodgers included Bell, a fourth-round pick in 2005 who was hitting .296 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs at Double-A Chattanooga.

"They wanted a young third baseman, and the Dodgers fit what they were looking for," O'Dowd said. "We didn't have one."

The Orioles' Mark Hendrickson and the Jays' Scott Downs have each been mentioned in media reports as possibilities for the Rockies, but in relation to the Deadline, O'Dowd said, "I don't see anything happening between now and then."

Teams can trade beyond the Deadline, as long as the player involved passes through the waiver process. A player must be on his team's roster by Aug. 31 to be eligible for the postseason.
