LeMahieu wins defensive honor

DENVER -- The Rockies' DJ LeMahieu, who committed just three errors in 90 games at second base, is the club's recipient of the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award, which was announced Thursday night.

Founded in 2012, the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award winners are determined by using a formula that balances scouting information, sabermetric analysis and basic fielding statistics. LeMahieu earned the honor over the Rockies' two Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners -- third baseman Nolan Arenado and left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and D-backs outfielder Gerardo Parra were named Wilson Defensive Player of the Year in their respective leagues. The Wilson Defensive Teams of the Year Award was shared in the AL by the Orioles and Royals and won by the D-backs in the NL. The awards were announced on a special show on MLB Network.

As in 2012, LeMahieu, 27, began the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs. And for the second straight year, he finished as the Rockies' starting second baseman. In 2013, after being called up on May 16, LeMahieu posted a .993 fielding percentage in 442 chances.

LeMahieu also played 14 games at third base and one at shortstop. In addition to his glove work, LeMahieu solidified his hold on the position by hitting .291 in 56 games after the All-Star break.

That's not all for defensive awards.

The GIBBY trophy for Defensive Player of the Year will be awarded as part of the 2013 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards, which are based on voting by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni and the Society for American Baseball Research, as well as fan balloting on MLB.com.

Through Sunday, Dec. 1, fans will be able to cast their ballots at MLB.com for the year's top defensive star, with no individual league affiliation.
