DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with left index finger inflammation. To fill Gonzalez's spot on the active roster, infielder Ryan Wheeler has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. In addition, catcher Michael McKenry has been recalled from Triple-A and catcher Jordan Pacheco has been designated for assignment. Wheeler (#44) and McKenry (#8) will be available for the Rockies against the Diamondbacks tonight at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).
Gonzalez, 28, made his fifth consecutive Opening Day roster with Colorado and has played in 52 games this season hitting .255 (50-for-196) with 12 doubles, a triple, 8 home runs, 31 RBI and 27 runs. He is the only Major Leaguer with an active streak of four-straight 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases seasons. The Maracaibo, Venezuela native earned his third career Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2013 (2010, 2012-13). In 743 Major League games, he has hit .296 (816-for-2753) with 163 doubles, 32 triples, 133 home runs, 450 RBI and 475 runs.
Wheeler, 25, will be making his second stint with Colorado having seen action in two games earlier this season. He went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. He began 2014 at Triple-A, where he has played in 50 games this year, hitting .253 (46-for-182) with 9 doubles, 3 home runs, 16 RBI and 17 runs. In 2013, Wheeler spent majority of the year with Colorado Springs but saw action in 28 games with the Rockies over three stints. In 80 Major League games, he has hit .240 (37-for-154) with 8 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs, 18 RBI and 13 runs.
McKenry, 29, is making his second stint with the Rockies after beginning the year at Triple-A Colorado Springs. In eight games for Colorado, he went 4-for-19 with 2 doubles, one RBI and 2 runs while starting 5 games at catcher. In Colorado Springs this season, he has hit .313 (26-for-83) with 6 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI and 15 runs in 23 games. In 201 career Major League games, McKenry has hit .222 (125-for-562) with 34 doubles, 17 home runs, 65 RBI and 53 runs.
Pacheco, 28, made his third-straight Opening Day roster this year. He has played in 22 games for Colorado, including 19 starts at catcher, while hitting .236 (17-for-72) with 6 doubles, a triple, 8 RBI and 4 runs. The Albuquerque, NM native has played in 270 Major League games and has hit .281 (247-for-878) with 54 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs, 98 RBI and 83 runs.
The Rockies currently have 39 on their 40-man roster.
